Can I really write my own grant proposal?

YES! Obviously it will help if you are a good writer but regardless of your writing ability, you should be able to write your own grant proposal without having to pay for a professional grant writer or amateur who offers to write your grant proposal on a commission basis. (Note: in my humble opinion, real grant writers expect to get paid for their craft, even if your proposal does not get selected for funding.

The basic fundamentals of grant-writing are not difficult to grasp and with a little practice and help from some of your colleagues (even professional grant writers get someone else to look over their work), you should be able tyo use the many free grant writing resources available online to help you prepare an excellent grant proposal.
